Star vs the Forces of Evil!

Good Media Monday to you lovely people! Yes, I am aware that it is Tuesday, but temporarily, till Game of Thrones ends Media Monday will be Media Monday.. Tuesday. Shh, shh, it’s fine. Just go with it.

I feel like I was just telling you how .gifs almost exclusively influence my television viewing, and it’s happened again. I saw this on Facebook and in my heart, I knew I had found my people.

My immediate and instinctual reaction was, “THIS IS THE GREATEST INTRO I HAVE EVER SEEN” all caps, no punctuation. My excitement was palpable. After the seventeenth replay, I thought, “I gotta find this show” and find it I did.

Let me introduce you to Star Butterfly and Marco. Are you ready to have a good time?

Gonna get a little weird, gonna have a good time!

Star Butterfly is a magical princess from the dimension of Mewni. On her 14th birthday, she receives the family heirloom wand. However, after she accidentally sets fire to her castle, her parents decide that a safer option is to send her to Earth as a foreign exchange student. She befriends Marco Diaz and lives with his family while attending Echo Creek Academy. Star and Marco must deal with everyday school life while protecting Star’s wand from falling into the hands of Ludo, a villain from Mewni who commands an army of monsters. Star and the folks from Mewni are able to travel across dimensions using “dimensional scissors” that can open portals.

Star Butterfly is a free spirit who embraces the cute as well as the oddly morbid. In my mind she is an amalgamation of Sailor Moon (unsurprising as she was reference material), Sue Heck from the Middle (the voice actress!!) and Star Girl from the novel of the same name written by Jerry Spinelli. What is really cool about the show is that the premise is set and everyone just goes with it. There’s no secrecy where Marco and Start are constantly trying to hide her powers, Star Butterfly is a magical princess from another dimension with a magical wand and monsters who want to steal it from her.. and everyone just rolls with it.

It's called kaaraateee!

This show is very similar to Gravity Falls, they share the same theme song person, and are about a young duo against a cast of goofy monsters. I could go through all the characters and compare them to Gravity Falls, but I think that would be selling the show a little short, they are very different shows.  Gravity Falls had an overarching plot with a big mystery to uncover and Star vs the Forces of Evil is more like a sitcom.  Which to be honest, after following the complex weavings and machinations of Game of Thrones is a much welcome break!

This is a great show, it is fun, interesting, really really fun and a joy to watch. I’ve heard it’s been renewed for two more seasons already which is amazing.
