I finally bit the bullet and ordered the Missha Magic Cushion case (their DIY cushion case, not their filled bb cushion) and filled it my old YSL Perfect Touch foundation. Oh, how I had coveted this foundation. I loved the idea of the convenience of it all as it came with an inbuilt brush. You can see from the picture that it actually made it more of a burden to use than anything. Cleaning the inbuilt brush was tedious, and no matter how I kept it(and it comes with a lid!) somehow managed to always attract dust. And so, it became relegated to the back of my makeup drawer, only to be used for a grand total of maybe 10 times in the years that I’ve had it.
Till now! I’ve always loved the matte finish and the fact that I had over 90% left made me unwilling to throw it out. As I’ve been having such great experiences with cushion foundations I thought, why not make one myself? I read reviews and ordered one with back up sponges just in case I made a mistake!
Step 1: Take the cushion case apart.
Sounds easy enough! However, the white plastic ring around the case slips off too! This makes it so much easier to deal with the cushion when you’re filling it up as you’re not dealing with the liquid spilling over and staining everything.
Step 2: Prep the area & the Foundation.
I like to take pictures on nice patterned backgrounds, but this one was going to get messy so I opted to lay down something I didn’t mind getting dirty. Especially for cutting up the brush attachment. The old caked on foundation did not help neither did my choice of using safety scissors!
Step 3: Fill & Assemble the Cushion.
I was most anxious about this part. A lot of the reviews overfilled the cushion so I was really careful not to, in fact I think I initially underfilled it. Which was okay, because I added some more to the top and used the cotton bud to spread it around, kind of like I was icing a cake. Then after it sank it a little I flipped the cushion so that the bottom part which had been absorbing the foundation was now facing upwards.
I chose not to mix the foundation with anything else, one because I’m not a chemist and I don’t know how the different products would react together in the case and two because I had so much foundation that I really didn’t need to. In fact I still have some left over!
I think it worked out really well. It still has the same matte finish which was a little weird to see on my face because I’m so used to wearing dewey foundations now! The coverage takes a while to build up as I’m applying light layers, but I actually prefer it this way as I get to control the coverage.
What I also thought was really interesting is how the DIY Missha Magic Cushion Case looks and feels just like the Lancôme cushion case. Hmm~
Anyway! I ordered the Cushion Case ordered from RubyRuby76 as they were the cheapest I could find, just note that you’re getting a heavy discount for them not including the packaging. That being said, they shipped quickly and it sped through customs so I can’t complain! I ordered the spare cushions from Cosmetic Love and although they arrived on the same flight, they took longer to clear through customs. Why? Because reasons!
(update: Missha have discontinued the DIY cushion kit)
There are other DIY cushion cases and limited edition ones that look more fancy than the one I used, but I thought why not continue the all white and chrome theme? I think this is the end of my cushion foundation journey. I don’t wear that much makeup, and three feels like more than enough to get through! That being said, I’ve heard word of cushion blushers and cushion concealers so you never know…

Your cushion looks really good!! I didn’t know it was that easy to do. How did you know the right amount of product needed to fill the sponge without overflowing it? I really want to try it now.

Thank you! It’s so easy to do, it seems harder but honestly the hardest thing was trying to make sure my camera wasn’t covered in foundation!
I didn’t know how to gauge! I was really worried about overfilling. I filled it a little (you can see the picture), put the cushion in the tin, then I kept adding a little more at a time on the top of the cushion, spreading it like icing with the cotton swab. Then I kept checking how saturated it was by using the swab to push the cushion to the side to see how it was absorbing, and then adding a bit more to the top. Once I thought it was getting to full I flipped the cushion over in the tin.

The reviews for the IOPE blush don’t seem like they’d be suitable for anyone who isn’t super pale, and even then the wear isn’t said to be very long. I still want to try it though!
I could always DIY a cushion blush!

How long did the compact last? Does it dry out? How does it compare to straight from the bottle in terms of how long it lasts?

Hello! Great questions!
The compact lasted a really long time without breaking down or changing texture, but I stopped using it after about two months. Mainly because I forgot about it.. When I threw it out (last weekend) it was still pretty moist, I just didn’t want to risk it!
I prefer it as an application method because I find it much quicker and I can control how much I use to get the exact finish I want. Plus it’s perfect for touch ups and travelling. I do however use it up a lot faster than I would normally with a brush as I’m losing some product to the cushion sponge. So, if you have a product you’re trying to use up I would recommend a DIY cushion. If it’s a foundation that costs all the £$ I would just use the rubycell puff as an applicator to get a similary finish.
